This week, butterflies — the Wanderer or Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is an immigrant to Australia, only known here since about 1871. They live on the sap from the milkweed plant (also introduced), which is poisonous. The adult butterfly is toxic to most predators, so do not eat them.   Read More

This week’s Little Creatures are birds. Today it’s a Lewin’s Honeyeater (Meliphaga lewinii). These are small, nervous birds. There are a lot of them here at home, but I find them hard to photograph. They sit quietly while you get your camera gear set up and as soon as you’ve got all the settings right and you’ve got them in focus, they fly off.   Read More
